Theater of Tragedy

Ikebana summer course, day 5: Skulls sizing each other up over some hosta leaves and a white chrysanthemum. The two faces remind me of the common symbol for theater – a happy face and a tragic face. They say skulls always carry a grin.

Bone Factory

Ikebana summer course 2013, day 2: What looks like metal pipes is actually a porcelain vase. On top of it there’s a deer head upside down, with its antlers supporting its weight. The grey, white, and blue material is some sort of plastic packing foam. This is all dry material.

Ikebana summer course, day 2: This deer rests on a concrete surface, which looks like a sacrificial or memorial stone. The plant materials have been freshly picked from a nearby garden.

Dead Meat

Ikebana summer course, day 2: Another freestyle piece inspired by animal bones. A dominating deer skull nests inside layers of dyed wool. I used maple and some purple garden flowers as plant materials.

Antlers Aweigh

Ikebana summer course 2013, day 1. I experimented on a pair of huge and heavy antlers, which presumably once belonged to an elk. Wrapped around you can see some blossoming Calystegia sepium bindweed. A white chrysanthemum has been attached on the left side. It reminded me of a lotus flower.
